Sinus Surgery & Treatment

Sinus Surgery & Treatment involves medical and surgical methods to treat chronic sinusitis — a condition where the sinuses (air-filled spaces in the skull) become inflamed or blocked, leading to pain, congestion, and breathing difficulties. When medications and other treatments fail to relieve symptoms, Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) or other minimally invasive procedures are performed to restore normal sinus drainage and improve nasal function.

Symptoms

Common signs and symptoms of chronic sinusitis that may require treatment or surgery include:

  • Persistent nasal congestion or blockage
  • Facial pain, pressure, or fullness around the eyes, cheeks, or forehead
  • Thick nasal discharge (yellow or green mucus)
  • Postnasal drip or sore throat
  • Reduced or loss of sense of smell
  • Headache and fatigue
  • Bad breath (halitosis)

Causes

Chronic sinus problems may develop due to various medical and environmental factors, including:

  • Chronic infections (bacterial, viral, or fungal)
  • Nasal polyps or growths blocking the sinuses
  • Deviated nasal septum causing obstruction
  • Allergic rhinitis or seasonal allergies
  • Exposure to pollutants, dust, or smoke
  • Immune system disorders

Treatment

Initial treatment for sinusitis typically involves medications such as antibiotics, nasal sprays, decongestants, or antihistamines. However, if symptoms persist despite medical therapy, surgical intervention may be needed.

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is the most common and effective procedure for chronic sinusitis. Using an endoscope — a thin, flexible tube with a camera — the surgeon removes blockages, polyps, or infected tissue to open up the sinus passages. This improves airflow, drainage, and overall sinus health. The surgery is minimally invasive, performed under local or general anesthesia, and has a quick recovery period.

Benefits

  • Improved breathing and sinus drainage
  • Relief from chronic congestion and facial pain
  • Reduced frequency of sinus infections
  • Better sense of smell and taste
  • Minimally invasive with no external scars
  • Enhanced quality of life and long-term comfort

Prevention

While sinus problems cannot always be completely prevented, these measures can help reduce the risk of recurrence and maintain sinus health:

  • Manage allergies with prescribed medications
  • Avoid exposure to pollutants, smoke, and strong odors
  • Use saline nasal sprays to keep nasal passages moist
  • Stay hydrated and maintain good nasal hygiene
  • Treat colds and upper respiratory infections promptly
  • Consult your ENT specialist if symptoms persist beyond 10–14 days
