Adenoidectomy

Adenoidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove enlarged or infected adenoids — small glands located at the back of the nasal passage. In children, enlarged adenoids can block the airway, cause breathing difficulties, snoring, or recurrent ear and sinus infections. This simple and safe procedure helps restore normal breathing, improve sleep, and reduce recurrent infections, especially when medical treatment is not effective.

Symptoms

Common signs that may indicate enlarged or infected adenoids include:

  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep
  • Frequent sinus or ear infections
  • Blocked nose and mouth breathing (especially at night)
  • Sleep disturbances or pauses in breathing (sleep apnea)
  • Persistent nasal discharge or congestion
  • Speech changes or nasal voice

Causes

Enlarged adenoids or adenoid infections can occur due to:

  • Recurrent bacterial or viral infections
  • Allergies causing chronic nasal inflammation
  • Genetic predisposition to adenoid enlargement
  • Exposure to pollution or secondhand smoke
  • Immune system response to frequent respiratory infections

Treatment / Procedure

Adenoidectomy is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about 20–30 minutes. The surgeon removes the adenoid tissue through the mouth using specialized instruments. No external cuts are made, and the procedure is typically bloodless with minimal discomfort. In some cases, adenoidectomy is performed along with tonsillectomy if both glands are enlarged. Most children can return home the same day, and recovery is quick with proper post-operative care.

Benefits

  • Improved breathing through the nose
  • Reduction or elimination of snoring
  • Better sleep quality and reduced sleep apnea episodes
  • Fewer sinus and ear infections
  • Enhanced speech and growth in children
  • Quick recovery with minimal complications

Prevention / Post-Surgery Care

While adenoid enlargement may not always be preventable, proper care after surgery ensures faster healing and lasting benefits:

  • Encourage rest for the first few days after surgery
  • Provide soft, cool foods and plenty of fluids
  • Avoid spicy or acidic foods during recovery
  • Keep the child away from smoke or strong odors
  • Maintain good oral and nasal hygiene
  • Follow all post-operative instructions and attend follow-up visits
