Nasal Polyp Surgery

Nasal Polyp Surgery is a procedure performed to remove soft, painless, noncancerous growths (polyps) that develop on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses due to chronic inflammation. These polyps can block nasal airflow, cause sinus infections, and affect breathing or smell. Surgical removal helps restore normal sinus drainage, relieve symptoms, and improve overall nasal function, especially when medications fail to provide relief.

Symptoms

Nasal polyps may not cause symptoms when small, but larger or multiple polyps can lead to:

  • Chronic nasal congestion or blockage
  • Loss or reduction of sense of smell and taste
  • Frequent sinus infections
  • Runny nose or postnasal drip
  • Facial pain, pressure, or headaches
  • Snoring or difficulty breathing through the nose

Causes

Nasal polyps typically develop due to prolonged inflammation or irritation in the nasal or sinus lining. Common causes include:

  • Chronic sinusitis (sinus infections)
  • Allergic rhinitis (nasal allergies)
  • Asthma or aspirin sensitivity
  • Fungal sinus infections
  • Genetic predisposition or immune system disorders
  • Structural nasal problems like deviated septum

Treatment / Procedure

Initially, medications such as nasal corticosteroid sprays, antihistamines, and antibiotics may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and shrink the polyps. If symptoms persist or the polyps are large, Endoscopic Sinus Surgery or Polypectomy is recommended.

During the surgery, the ENT specialist uses an endoscope — a thin, flexible tube with a camera — to access the nasal passages. The polyps and any obstructing tissue are carefully removed to open up the sinus drainage pathways. The procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia, is minimally invasive, and typically takes 30–60 minutes. Most patients can go home the same day and resume normal activities within a few days.

Benefits

  • Improved breathing and nasal airflow
  • Restored sense of smell and taste
  • Reduction in sinus infections and nasal discharge
  • Relief from facial pressure and headaches
  • Better sleep quality and overall comfort
  • Minimally invasive procedure with quick recovery

Prevention / Post-Surgery Care

While nasal polyps can recur, preventive care and proper management can help maintain long-term relief:

  • Use prescribed nasal sprays or saline rinses regularly
  • Avoid allergens, smoke, and pollutants
  • Manage asthma and allergies effectively
  • Maintain good nasal hygiene and hydration
  • Follow all post-operative care instructions from your ENT specialist
  • Attend regular follow-up visits to monitor healing and prevent recurrence
