Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job”, is a surgical procedure performed to reshape or reconstruct the nose for aesthetic or functional reasons. It can improve the appearance of the nose, correct deformities caused by injury or birth defects, and enhance breathing by correcting structural problems such as a deviated septum. Rhinoplasty aims to create a natural and harmonious balance between the nose and facial features.

Symptoms / Indications

Rhinoplasty may be recommended for both cosmetic and medical reasons. Common indications include:

  • Desire to improve the shape, size, or symmetry of the nose
  • Nasal hump, wide or drooping nasal tip
  • Deviated nasal septum causing breathing difficulty
  • Previous nasal injury or trauma
  • Congenital nasal deformities
  • Chronic nasal obstruction not improved with medication

Causes

Rhinoplasty is performed to correct issues arising from various causes, including:

  • Genetic or inherited nasal shape abnormalities
  • Injury or trauma to the nose
  • Developmental deformities
  • Deviated septum or nasal bone misalignment
  • Functional problems like chronic congestion or difficulty breathing

Treatment / Procedure

Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes precise incisions inside the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or across the columella (open rhinoplasty) to access the bone and cartilage. The nasal structure is reshaped, reduced, or augmented as needed, and internal breathing issues are corrected simultaneously if required. The incisions are closed carefully to minimize visible scarring. The procedure usually takes 1–2 hours, and patients can return home the same day or the next day after surgery.

Benefits

  • Improves the shape, size, and proportion of the nose
  • Corrects structural defects for better breathing
  • Enhances facial harmony and appearance
  • Restores nasal function after injury or trauma
  • Boosts confidence and self-image
  • Minimal scarring with long-lasting results

Prevention / Post-Surgery Care

While rhinoplasty addresses both aesthetic and functional issues, maintaining results requires proper care and precautions:

  • Avoid nose injury or trauma during recovery
  • Do not blow your nose for at least a week after surgery
  • Keep your head elevated to reduce swelling
  • Avoid strenuous activities or contact sports for 4–6 weeks
  • Follow all post-operative instructions and attend follow-up visits
  • Protect your nose from direct sunlight to prevent discoloration
