Nasal Fracture Repair

Nasal Fracture Repair is a surgical or non-surgical procedure used to realign and restore the shape and function of the nose after a nasal bone fracture. The nasal bones are the most frequently broken facial bones, usually resulting from trauma, accidents, or sports injuries. Repairing a nasal fracture promptly helps restore normal breathing, prevent deformity, and improve the overall appearance of the nose.

Symptoms

Common symptoms that indicate a nasal fracture include:

  • Pain, swelling, or tenderness around the nose
  • Bleeding from the nostrils
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Visible deformity or crooked appearance of the nose
  • Bruising around the eyes or under the nose
  • Crackling sound or feeling when touching the nasal bridge

Causes

Nasal fractures usually occur due to direct trauma or impact to the face. Common causes include:

  • Sports-related injuries (football, basketball, boxing, etc.)
  • Road traffic accidents
  • Falls or slips
  • Physical altercations or assault
  • Workplace or industrial accidents
  • Accidental bumping or collisions

Treatment

The treatment for a nasal fracture depends on the severity and type of fracture. Minor fractures may heal with conservative management such as ice packs, pain relief, and rest. For displaced fractures, a closed reduction procedure is usually performed under local or general anesthesia to manually realign the nasal bones. In more severe cases, open reduction surgery may be needed to reconstruct the nasal bones and cartilage. The goal is to restore nasal structure, improve breathing, and achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance. Splints or nasal packing may be placed temporarily for support during healing.

Benefits

  • Restores normal nasal shape and appearance
  • Improves breathing and nasal airflow
  • Prevents long-term deformity or nasal obstruction
  • Reduces pain, swelling, and discomfort
  • Enhances facial symmetry and confidence
  • Quick recovery with minimal downtime

Prevention

While accidents can’t always be prevented, you can reduce the risk of nasal fractures with these preventive measures:

  • Wear protective headgear or face guards during contact sports
  • Use seatbelts and airbags while driving or riding vehicles
  • Be cautious on slippery or uneven surfaces to avoid falls
  • Avoid physical altercations or risky behavior
  • Seek immediate medical attention after any facial injury
